Caller ID can be faked. Don’t believe it!
The phone rings. Caller ID says IRS. Or Social Security. Or the Sheriff's Office.
A voice tells you there's a warrant out for your arrest. Unpaid taxes. A frozen Social Security number. Something urgent, something scary, something that needs to be fixed right now — usually with gift cards or a wire transfer.
Here's the good news: none of that is how it actually works.
What real government contact looks like
The IRS does not call to demand immediate payment. They do not threaten arrest over the phone. They do not ask for gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
When the IRS needs to reach you, they send a letter. First. Always. If there's ever a real issue with your taxes or benefits, you'll have paper in hand before anyone calls.
Social Security works the same way. They won't suspend your number over the phone, and they'll never ask you to move your money to a "safe account" to protect it.
Why this one works so well
Scammers use fear on purpose. A calm person double-checks things. A frightened person acts fast. That's the whole strategy — keep you moving before you have time to think.
Caller ID can be faked too, so seeing "IRS" or "Social Security Administration" on your screen doesn't mean anything. That part's easy to fix.
What to do instead
If a call like this comes in, here's all you need to remember:
Hang up. Call the agency back yourself using a number you find independently — not one the caller gives you. Take your time. Real government agencies are not in a hurry, and neither should you be.
If something feels off, it's okay to say "let me call you back" and simply not. Or better yet, say NOTHING and simply hang up!
