A Home That Keeps Up With You
Check, check, and double-check references for any contractor you’re thinking about hiring.
You love your home. You know where everything is. The good chair, the good light, the spot where the coffee tastes best.
So why leave before you're ready?
A few smart updates can make your home fit your life now, and for years to come. These are the ones that make the biggest difference.
A curbless shower
No lip to step over. The floor slopes gently to the drain, and the shower simply begins. It looks sleek and it's easier on the knees. If you ever use a walker or a shower chair, it works with them instead of against them.
It takes planning, so raise it with your contractor early.
Tile that grips back
Shiny tile and wet feet don't mix. Choose matte or textured finishes. Smaller tiles help too, since more grout lines mean more traction. Ask about the slip rating, called DCOF.
For wet areas, look for 0.42 or higher.
Grab bars that look like they belong
Forget the hospital look. Today's grab bars come in brushed nickel, matte black, and other finishes that match your fixtures. Some double as towel bars or shelves.
One rule: they must be anchored into studs or blocking. Suction cups and ordinary towel bars won't hold. The best spots are beside the shower, beside the toilet, and at the tub entry.
Light where you need it
Start with brighter bulbs and lighted switches. Add night lights along the path from bed to bathroom.
Then try the clever little fix: rechargeable motion-sensor lights. They stick or snap on with a magnet. Put them in a closet, the pantry, a hallway, the laundry room, or under the bed.
Walk in, and the light comes on. Walk out, and it goes off. No fumbling for a switch. No stepping into a dark room. Recharge them every so often with a USB cable.
They're inexpensive and take about five minutes to install. It's an easy first project this weekend.
Thinking about a move instead?
Use the same list as a home-shopping checklist. Look for a step-free entry, a walk-in shower, wide doorways, and good light. Stay or go, it's your call, on your terms.
